Sensing and Acquisition Architecture Specification and Instrument Integration Strategy Workshop
Organization
- Date: August 5-7, 2008 (8:00-17:00)
- Location: Calit2 (Atkinson Hall) #5004, UCSD, San Diego, CA
- Duration: 3 days
- Size: 8 invitees
Description
The goal of the architecture specification workshop is to define the scope of the Sensing & Acquisition Subsystem capabilities, identify the gaps between subsystem technologies, and investigate how the technologies get integrated. The following topics will be covered during the workshop:
- instrument data acquisition
- data management associated with instruments
- operations management and coordination
- relationships with Planning & Prosecution, Data Management, and COI subsystems
For the Instrument Integration, to goal is to identify which are the instruments and the expected functions. The following topics will be covered during the workshop:
- the communication between the instrument and the infrastructure: between the instrument and the instrument proxy, as well as between the instrument proxy and the infrastructure
- the standard state model for instrument resources
- the command set for data acquisition, as well as for management and monitoring

Preparation Materials
Relevant documents from CI-ADT
The initial draft for some of the Sensing & Acquisition (SA) subsystem architecture documents as tailored from the overall OOI-CI DoDAF documents:
- SA-OV2 - operational nodes
- SA-SV4b - subsystem services
- SA-OV7-Figures - domain models for instrument and instrument platform
Pre-workshop presentations
The objective of the pre-workshop presentations is to identify the major of the subsystem capabilities, open technology issues, and dependencies/commitments on/to the CI and these technologies prior to the meeting.
The calls will last for 90 min (30 min presentations + discussions). The participants need to prepare a 30 min design and/or technically presentation for the each of the technologies being considered for the Sensing and Acquisition system:

Logistics and Reimbursement
All workshop participants should make their own flight arrangements to San Diego and retain receipts for reimbursement through Karen Schwamb at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Karen's contact information is:

We've reserved (and prepaid for) rooms for workshop attendees traveling from out of town at the Estancia La Jolla at 9700 N. Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla, CA 92037 (858.550.1000). They provide plenty of information (including directions) on their web site.

Workshop attendees will be responsible for incidentals. Please retain your receipts (if necessary) for reimbursement through Karen.
A taxi from the airport to the hotel is quickest and easiest way to the hotel. At that point, we encourage you to coordinate with other attendees for transportation from the hotel to the workshop location (Room 5004 Atkinson Hall - Warren College ). For those who might wish to walk from the hotel to campus, we recommend that you give yourself 20 to 30 minutes - this is an estimate for a brisk paced walk with some hills. Your foot route from the hotel to Atkinson Hall (F-6 on the campus map- W in Warren College) is East on Pangea (across Torrey Pines Road from the hotel entrance), straight onto Thurgood Marshall Lane, dogleg right then left onto Voigt Drive, straight across Hopkins Drive, down the hill, up the hill - and you're at Atkinson.
For those who choose to rent a car and drive - on-campus parking requires the purchase of a daily permit from kiosks located at the visitor information centers or in the newer parking structures. Keep the permit for reimbursement through Karen. When driving to campus from the hotel, turn left onto North Torrey Pines Road, and turn right at the second light onto North Point Drive. Get into the right lane and turn right at the second stop sign. This is the visitor's center where you can buy a parking pass. Turn right out of the visitors center onto North Point Drive, which becomes Hopkins Drive and go straight through 2 construction stops. At the third stop, turn left on Voigt Drive and turn left at the next stop to enter Parking Lot P-0502. If you arrive late, and cannot find parking in Lot 502, please proceed back up the hill and park in the new parking structure (not shown on this map) on the Northwest corner of the intersection of Hopkins and Voigt. This parking structure has its own parking pass kiosks - so if you don't mind the short walk from there to Atkinson - you can skip the detour to the visitor information center and proceed to the parking structure.
Rita Bauer (rmbauer@ucsd.edu) can help with driver-rider coordination if you will let her know what your itinerary is. Her contact information is:

Workshop attendees will receive breakfast and lunch, but you will be on your own for dinner each day, so we'll provide a list of local restaurants to make your selection easier. Woods Hole meal perdiem reimbursement rate is limited to $57 per day. As a single meal, dinner is limited to $30. Karen will reimburse meals at these rates.
We hope this provides you with the information you need - but if not - please do not hesitate to contact Karen or Rita should you have questions regarding the workshop or need assistance in making your arrangements.
