OOI CI mail lists are based on mailman.

If you want to find out more about an email list, or about email lists on the server, you have several options.

Visit the list info pages

You can find the list info page for your list at the end of each email sent via that list. This will be of the form http://ooici.ucsd.edu/mailman/listinfo/listname (substitute your lists name for 'listname').

You will need to know your email account under which you are subscribed to the list, and your password. If you don't know your password, see the next section.

Send a command email to the list's request address

There are a lot of commands that can be executed by mailing them to the email list's "request" address. The request address is of the form listname-request@ooici.ucsd.edu.

Put each command on a line by itself; put the command "end" on a line after your commands, or delete the rest of your message including any signature line. Send the mail, and you should get back a response very quickly with the result of your commands.

Particularly useful commands are "help", which returns the list of commands, and "set help", which returns the list of options that the user can set.

Three other favorites:

• who: see all the people on this list (you must be on the list, for OOI CI lists)
• password: return your password
• lists: see all public lists (none of the OOI CI lists are public)

Send email to other list-related addresses

Other commands can be accomplished by sending mail to corresponding addresses:

• request to join/subscribe: listname-join@ooici.ucsd.edu (message header and content ignored)
• request to leave/unsubscribe: listname-leave@ooici.ucsd.edu (message header and content ignored)
• email the list owner: listname-owner@ooici.ucsd.edu
