OOI CI Release 1 develops the "Data Distribution Network". One of its main focus areas is to develop an end-to-end data distribution system with a flexible stream-based common operating infrastructure that can serve numerical modeling and data analysis communities.

The four of the six CI subsystems that are constructed in Release 1 are

Common Operating Infrastructure (COI):

Provides the backbone integration environment based on a messaging infrastructure that provides identity management, governance and reliable communications in a distributed application environment.

Common Execution Infrastructure (CEI):

Provides an execution environment for system and user processes that enables reliable execution and scale to demand.

Data Management (DM)

Provides the dynamic data distribution network for science data and metadata based on common data and metadata formats

Sensing and Acquisition (S&A):

Provides interfaces to sensors, instruments and instrument platform resources, in order to enable data acquisition and instrument control.
